10 surprises and unexpected absences from the Golden Globes

This year's award ceremony will take place digitally on Sunday, February 28, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

We have learned for so many years that the Golden Globes are unexpected. It has become almost a habit with a text with “unexpected candidacies and absences” every year after the announcement of the candidates and not unjustly, since the choices always cause questions. He may have wondered how many productions we saw in 2020 since most were postponed due to COVID? And yet the past year, despite the restrictions and postponements, gave us many interesting options.

Following the announcement of the candidates, the question is “who is absent from the list” and “who did we not expect to see candidates”?

Remember that this year's award will take place digitally on Sunday, February 28, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

ABSENCES:

Meryl Streep: The iconic actress who loves big awards to be nominated (but rarely an Oscar winner) starred in two films, the Netflix musical “Prom” and “Let Them All Talk” '' for HBO Max. Although she has 32 Golden Globe nominations in her career, this time she probably did not impress the committee as she is completely absent from the list of candidates.

Steven Yeun: The protagonist of the much-discussed film '' Minari '' is not among the candidates, although he received excellent reviews for his performance. In addition, the committee behind the Golden Globes chose to include the film in the “Best Foreign Language” category, even though it is an American production (specifically Brad Pitt's Plan B). The cast is simply made up of Asian actors.

Zendaya: She may have won an Emmy for “Euphoria”, the Golden Globes apparently won't do her any favors. The movie “Malcolm & Marie”, which was released in selected theaters before being uploaded to Netflix, received mixed reviews, but the performances of the two protagonists (Zendaya and John David Washington) stood out as one of the highlights.

Michaela Coel: The series “I May Destroy You” created by Coel, in which she stars, deals with events from her own life, received rave reviews and was loved by audiences and critics. The committee of these awards, however, probably did not like it so much since it is absent from all categories.

Bridgerton: Whatever the series – phenomenon, with millions of streams around the world. Shonda Rhimes' first series for Netflix, and its protagonists, were left out of the Golden Globes altogether.

Dead to Me: The Netflix black comedy that was loved by audiences and critics alike, but also by the Emmys (since both starring Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate were nominees) seemed to be a definite nomination for the Golden Globes. Eventually both the series and the cast were left out.

SURPRISES:

Emerald Fennell: The director of the special film “Promising Young Woman” is coming to break a bad habit of years where no woman was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Best Director”. Fennell, Regina King and Chloe Zhao became the sixth, seventh and eighth women in the history of the awards to claim this award this year.

James Corden: His appearance in “The Prom” did not bring him good reviews. In particular, almost no one liked it. However, the well-known presenter and actress seems to have liked the Golden Globes committee, and is the only one to claim an award, through a cast that included Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.

Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor: It was almost a given that TV stars Diana and Charles of '' The Crown '' would be nominated for a Golden Globe. But what we did not expect was that we would see them in the main role categories. Corrin is finally a candidate alongside Olivia Colman (starring as Elizabeth).

Emily in Paris: It was a relaxed and enjoyable comedy series that swept Netflix. But was she good enough to be nominated for a Golden Globe? Probably yes. “Emily in Paris” is vying for an award in the category “Best Comedy or Musical”, but Lily Collins was also recognized for her role as Emily.
