Ocean Viking, the rescue ship of the SOS Mediterranee organization, rescued and boarded yesterday and today 139 migrants who were in danger sailing off Libya, the European NGO announced.
In the first rescue operation, the ship collected 45 people aboard a wooden boat last night. During the second rescue, 94 people gathered today, Tuesday, in an overloaded inflatable boat, which was also sailing in international waters.
Among those rescued were a baby, 25 minors and 14 women, according to the NGO.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 22,000 people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean since 2014 trying to reach Europe, including more than 1,500 since the beginning of this year.
