Cyprus' commitment to achieving the revised United Nations targets for HIV and AIDS until 2030, the Minister of Health Michalis Hatzipantela emphasized on Thursday, during a press conference held at the Ministry on the occasion of World AIDS Day.
In his greeting, the Minister Health reported that this year's World AIDS Day is marked by stagnation in the achievement of the goals of stopping the spread of the disease, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other economic and geopolitical challenges on a global scale.
As he said, according to the World Health Organization, for the year 2021, 38.4 million people were living with HIV, of which 1.5 million were new diagnoses of the disease, while 28.7 million of them had access to antiretroviral treatment.
He added that racial, economic and social inequalities in access to diagnostic tests, antiretroviral treatment and clinical laboratory monitoring remain and widen, constitute hampering efforts to end the HIV pandemic.
