With the participation of 33 wineries of our place, today, in a hotel in Limassol, the tasting of 178 wines began, in the context of the 13th Cyprus Wine Competition, with the Minister of Agriculture, Costas Kadis, reiterating the state support to the wine-growing communities, winemakers and the winemakers.
At a press conference, Costas Kadis stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, as well as the Government, support any initiative that contributes to the promotion of quality wines in our country and that, at the heart of their policy is the effort highlighting the special characteristics of Cypriot wines, “characteristics that distinguish them worldwide”.
“Supporting wine-growing communities, wine-growers and winemakers is one of the main objectives of our agricultural policy”, he stressed and added that, implementing the National Program for Support of the Wine Sector (EPSA), the competent government services are expected to provide more from € 22 million to winegrowers and winemakers by the end of this programming period, which ends in 2023.
He noted that, in relation to dealing with the effects of the pandemic, the Green Harvest Measure, with a budget of over 3.5 million euros, immediately relieved the growers during the two years 2020-2021, relieved the winemakers from the excess grapes and in addition eventually led the wine market to equilibrium and price restraint.
“At the same time, the Government granted, in the form of an additional “While three special aid schemes were implemented for winemakers, with a budget of over one million euros, to help manage the large stocks of wine that have accumulated due to the pandemic”, he added.
Referring to the competition, which is held under the auspices of the Ministry and the International Organization of Vine and Wine, Costas Kadis said that the seven-member committee, which began the tastings, is composed of people with significant scientific and empirical knowledge in the field, chaired by , of Romanian origin, Professor Valeriu Cotea.

The support of the competition was expressed by the Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nikolaidis, reminding that Limassol is the cradle of viticulture and winemaking in our country and honors the Cypriot winemakers through the biggest popular festival of Cyprus, the Feast of Wine. p> There is no doubt, he continued, that the Cyprus Wine Competition has been embraced by the winemakers of our country and has contributed in its own way to the improvement and promotion of the unique quality characteristics of Cypriot wines.

As part of the competition, the Department of Agriculture will organize a technical day on Wednesday, May 4, from 18:00 to 22:00, at the Cultural Center “Panos Solomonidis” in Limassol, during which the members of the jury of the Competition , will share with the audience their own experiences and expertise in the wine sector.
The culmination of the events will be the award ceremony and the official dinner that will be held on Friday, May 6 at 19:00, in a hotel in Limassol.
In addition to questions, the President of the Winemakers Association Of Cyprus, Charalambos Panagiotou assured that its members will receive all the quantities of production in 2022, while in relation to the observed accuracy, he stated that the prices of Cypriot wines are estimated to have increased by 7 to 8%.
