25% price increases in restaurants - Price lists are changing

Ioanna Mantzipa

Price lists are being changed and prices are being revised by catering entrepreneurs with many unable to absorb the tsunami of increases in energy and raw material products imported into Cyprus. PASIKA estimates speak of an increase that may reach 25%. An increase that will be shouldered by the consumer, however, will not be felt since there may be a harmonious distribution of increases in other items in the price list.

Speaking to “F”, the general secretary of the Pancyprian Association of Leisure Center Owners (PASIKA), Fanos Leventis, stated that despite the efforts made by entrepreneurs not to make increases, they are so high that many are not able to absorb them. . “If we consider that only energy, electricity and LPG have an increase of up to 40%, you realize that energy alone would justify any increase of an entrepreneur.”

Due to the situation, several entrepreneurs have applied to the Ministry of Tourism to review the price lists for their products.

Asked if large increases are recorded, Mr. Leventis said that PASIKA estimates that there will be increases that will reach 25%. “We will see increases of 10% and in some cases they can reach 25%.” He even explained that at the moment they have as a given that several companies have made increases of 10% – 15%. “These rates are not prohibitive for visitors to a place to eat or to order food for the home,” he noted.

The Secretary General of the Association of Leisure Center Owners, when asked in which items there will be a price revision upwards, explained that the increases will mainly concern dishes which for the entrepreneur have increased the cost of their preparation. They mainly concern products that are imported or even materials that are used. He brought for example the preparation of a sauce that is not produced in Cyprus and the import companies have made vertical increases. “Right now there is a huge increase in frying oils as well, so it will be impossible to absorb all the increases,” he noted.

Mr. Leventis added that for his part PASIKA is making titanic efforts so that entrepreneurs can keep the increases at the lowest possible rate. “We are looking for ways to control the way they shop. That is, to buy such quantities so that they do not have losses and also to prepare the right quantities, so that there is no loss of prepared food “.

He also said that a portion of entrepreneurs in the industry will absorb the increases, in an effort to avoid printing new catalogs. He explained, however, that this is very difficult in business, since the owner will bear the cost himself.

He concluded that for the time being there is no complete picture for all imported products, however for many they are aware that their growth will be vertical. “For example, frying oil, its increase can reach 80%. Those in charge should be very careful in ordering and purchasing products. No loss is justified. “Zero food waste, that is our motto,” he said.
