Cyprus was the country with the fourth highest ratio of passenger cars to its population in 2022, as 658 cars for every 1,000 inhabitants, a number that was significantly higher than the EU average of 560 vehicles per 1,000 people, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

At EU level, the average number of cars per population increased by 14.3% during the decade 2012 to 2022, from 490 to 560 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants.

In Cyprus, the number increased by 19.9% ​​over the same period, from 549 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants in 2012 to 658 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants in 2022.

In 2022 Italy had the highest ratio with 684 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants. They were followed by Luxembourg (678), Finland (661) and Cyprus (658).

Latvia had the lowest rate with 414 passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants, followed by Romania (417) and Hungary (424).

The figures show higher rates of passenger car growth in central and eastern countries EU between 2012 and 2022. Among the Member States, Romania recorded the highest increase in passenger cars per 1000 inhabitants (+86.2%, +193), followed by Croatia (+44.8%, +152), Hungary ( +40.9%, +123), Slovakia (+40.1%, +135) and Estonia (+39.7%, +181).

On the other hand, Cyprus was one of the countries with the lowest ratios of road tractors (vehicles pulling semi-trailer trucks), together with Malta (2.3 and 2.2 per 1000 population respectively), which is explained by with Eurostat due to the insular geography of the two countries and the short distances.

The highest ratios per Member State were recorded in 2022 in the Baltic States and some central and eastern EU members. The highest figures were recorded in Lithuania (on average 17.3 tractors per 1000 inhabitants), followed by Poland (12.9 ), Estonia (9.5), Hungary (9.3) and Romania (8.8).

The lowest figures were recorded in the Czech Republic (0.3), Sweden (0, 9), Austria and Malta (both 2.2), and Cyprus and Greece (both 2.3).

In 2022, the average number of road tractors per 1000 inhabitants in the EU it was 4.8, with the number increasing by 45.2% from 2012 to 2022 (from 3.3 to 4.8).

During this period, three countries more than doubled the ratio of road tractors: Romania (+127.4%), Croatia (+121.5%) and, having a comparatively high percentage already in 2012, Lithuania (+101.8%). Further high growth rates were recorded for Poland (91.2%) and Slovenia (82.9%).

A significant decrease in the motorization ratio of road tractors between 2012 and 2022 was recorded in the Czech Republic (-61.9 %). The decrease was less significant in Luxembourg (-15.4%) and Malta (-13.0%).
