60-day prison sentence for a 65-year-old who drove drunk in Larnaca

A 65-year-old man has been sentenced to prison and the suspension of his driver's license after being found guilty of drink-driving and reckless and dangerous driving.

According to the evidence presented by the Prosecuting Authority before the Court, on December 11, 2019, around 01:30 in the morning, the 65-year-old was driving his car on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, in Larnaca, where he was also noticed by another passing driver, driving in the opposite lane of the road. At a point on the road opposite the Fire Station, the 65-year-old stopped his vehicle and after getting out of it, he tried to change one of the wheels of his car, which had a breakdown. In his attempt to change the tire, the 65-year-old fell to the ground, as a result of which he was injured in the face.

At the same time, the passing driver informed the members of the Fire Station, who in turn informed the Police. Members of the Police went to the scene for tests and found that the 65-year-old was showing symptoms of intoxication. An ambulance was called to the scene and transported the 65-year-old to Larnaca General Hospital, where he received treatment.

At the General Hospital, blood samples were taken from the 65-year-old, for a laboratory examination of driving under the influence of alcohol. From the laboratory examination, it was established that the 65-year-old was driving under the influence of alcohol, since an amount of alcohol of 259 mg%ml was detected in his blood, instead of up to 50mg%ml, which is the legal limit.

With the completion of the police examinations by the Larnaca Traffic Police, the case of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and dangerous driving was registered for adjudication by the District Court of Larnaca. After hearing the case, the District Court found the 65-year-old guilty, this morning sentenced him to three months in prison for the offense of driving under the influence of alcohol and 30 days in prison for the offense of reckless and dangerous driving, with the prison terms to run concurrently.

The Court imposed on the 65-year-old a penalty of deprivation of his driver's license for a period of 60 days, effective from the day of his release from prison, as well as five penalty points on his driver's license.

The case was investigated by the Traffic Department of the Larnaca Police Department.
