The environmental authority has given the green light for a project of several million euros regarding the expansion of the existing building facilities of the European University of Cyprus in Nicosia, and in particular the construction and operation of a new six-storey building with a basement, which will host the medical/dental department.
The works that will be carried out include in the first phase the demolition of an open-air amphitheater, interiors and an underground parking lot, and then the construction of a six-storey building with a basement in their place.
The new building will be connected, via above ground bridge, with an existing building located opposite the private road to the south.
The demolition works are the subject of a separate urban planning permit for which an Application for a Demolition Permit has been submitted to the Municipality of Engomi with no. DEB101/20 and therefore the relevant effects are not examined in detail in this MEEP, however they have been duly taken into account and appropriate references have been made to the relevant direct and cumulative effects where deemed appropriate.
The estimated cost of the project is at approximately € 7,740,000.
The buildable area of the proposed building will amount to 5,124 sq.m. and includes the Purchase Rate of 1175 sq.m. The total area of the development space of the European University of Cyprus amounts to 25,620 sq.m., while the area of the existing facilities of the University is 21,671 sq.m.
The proposed building will occupy (ground cover) an area 1,008sq.m. On the ground floor of the proposed building there will be offices for students, visitors as well as a teaching amphitheater and on the other floors medical spaces and laboratories will be created for academic purposes. On the fourth floor where the dental school will exist.
