An Ecuadorian court has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be granted citizenship.
An administrative court in Quito ruled that procedural errors were made when Ecuador was granted Australian citizenship in 2017, the El Comercio newspaper reported in a report on Tuesday.
Julian Assange remains incarcerated in the Belmars High Security Prison in London. The United States is seeking his extradition.
He is accused of plotting with former US military analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain and disclose a huge amount of classified military and diplomatic documents in 2010. The documents, which focused on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, were leaked to WikiLeaks via WikiLeaks. Assange also collaborated with leading international media outlets that made a number of revelations.
The founder of the website has been charged with 18 counts by the US government, which argues, among other things, that it endangered the lives of US informants. If convicted, Julian Assange faces up to 175 years in prison.

Mr Assange sought refuge at the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2012 to avoid extradition. He was granted asylum and then citizenship of the Latin American country. The then Ecuadorian government planned to grant him diplomatic status, which would allow him to leave the embassy safely. But after the change of government in Ecuador, the relationship between the country's authorities and Assange deteriorated rapidly.
Following the revocation in 2019 of the asylum granted to him by the British police, he entered the embassy and forcibly arrested the Australian, who was accused of violating the terms of his temporary release from the justice of the United Kingdom.
