Cyprus-UK consultations on vaccination certificates for the tourist season

Undersecretary of Tourism Savvas Perdios tells the Guardian that the decision to announce the opening of Cyprus from May 1 for those visitors from Britain who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus was taken “because we do not know when an agreement will be reached at European level” on how welcoming tourists this summer.

“For the people who will travel here, we wanted to provide the assurance that Cyprus will be ready to welcome them. “Travel planning requires certainty”, explains Mr. Perdios.

The British newspaper comments that the Cypriot decision came while the EU is “struggling” to form a united front on the so-called “vaccination passports”.

The Undersecretary of Tourism also says that scales of the two countries are already in discussions on the details of how the vaccination certificates will work.

“It's a matter of technical details as to what the certificate will look like. We will have further meetings in the coming days and weeks to finalize everything. We will use whatever the British Government wants us to use. It is up to the United Kingdom to decide whether the certificate will be digital or whether it will be a certificate from a GP. We will not ask for a vaccination certificate based on our own plan “, clarifies Mr. Perdios.

The Undersecretary adds that from April 1, arrivals from Britain to Cyprus will be allowed without quarantine, unless they are diagnosed with a coronavirus test and need to be isolated.

“We basically guarantee a quarantine-free trip from the UK from 1 April. “What will be in force from May 1 will be that those who have a vaccination certificate will be facilitated so that they do not have to take a test”, Mr. Perdios explains to the Guardian.

He adds that the Cypriot Government will continue to cover all the costs of the quarantine process for visitors who will be positive for the coronavirus while in Cyprus.

“But we are not only open to vaccinated travelers. “Everyone will be allowed to travel here, with or without certificates and of course the date of the trip depends on the British Government and when it will decide to allow travel abroad”, concludes the Deputy Minister of Tourism.
