A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for murder in Paphos

The Permanent Criminal Court, which is meeting in Paphos, sentenced the 23-year-old to 17 years in prison for the crime of murder against a 20-year-old in the “Vrexi” area of Chloraka. A 26-year-old man was also sentenced to 3 years in prison on the abduction charge. The two men were wanted for a period of 8 months for the murder case.

At today's trial, the Permanent Paphos Criminal Court meeting in Paphos, chaired by Dimitrios Kitsios and chaired by Maro Papadima and Toula Papapetrou, announced the sentences for the two defendants and ordered that the sentences start on December 5, 2020, a date from which the two accused are in custody. The two defendants had answered no admission to the charges they were facing.

It is noted that during the court proceedings their defense attorney, lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou had exchanged views with the representative of the Prosecution Authority to amend the indictment. Mr. Alexandrou in particular had suggested that the accusation faced by one of his clients, from premeditated murder to homicide, be differentiated, a request which was finally accepted by the Legal Service.

Regarding the case of the other nine defendants, it is noted that it is in progress for the purposes of a hearing.

Specifically, following a request for postponement by the Representative of the Attorney General, Lawyer of the Republic Andreas Aristides, the hearing of the case of homicide of Chloraka for the nine accused was postponed today.

As mentioned in the Court, the reason for the postponement was the preparation of admissible facts and the request was not objected to by the lawyers of the defendants, 1,2,4,9 lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou, the 3rd Antonis Houvartas, the 5th and the 6th Elena Mala , of the 7th Dr. Artemis Savvidou and the 8th Myria Savvidou, adding that valuable judicial time will indeed be left over.

The Permanent Criminal Court set up by the president Dimitrios Kitsios and chaired by Maro Papadima and Toula Papapetrou, approved the request and set the case for 22/9 to start the hearing with the submission of admissible facts by the parties.

The Lawyer of the Republic stated that he also intends to add as witnesses to the indictment the members of the other criminal case that ended today with a sentence, ie the 23-year-old and the 26-year-old.

The lawyers stated that they will take a position during the trial where the request will be made. In addition, Mr. Aristides suspended the case for the 9th Mr. on behalf of the Attorney General, saying that it was not found to be related to the accusation of assistance after the commission of crimes. Defendant 9 was subsequently acquitted of the charges against him. The other eight are free on parole.

According to the information under investigation, on the night of April 10, at a point near the road Chlorakas – Kato Paphos, after an argument with other persons, the 20-year-old was attacked with a knife, resulting in his fatal injury.

Members of the Police had rushed to the spot for examinations and after many hours of searching, the next morning they located the body of the victim, hidden in a riverbed in the area of Chloraka.
