A condition for securing sovereign equality for the talks, Olgun says – What the former Turkish Cypriot negotiator said
The former Turkish Cypriot negotiator, Ergun Olgun stated that securing sovereign equality before the start of formal substantive negotiations is a condition for resume conversations.
As transmitted by the occupied territories, in his statements to the “news agency”, Mr. Olgun claimed that the objective of the Turkish side is “to eliminate the ambiguity regarding the definition of the rights and status of the Turkish Cypriot side” based on the lessons learned from the previous period .
Referring to the position taken by the Turkish side in Geneva in 2021, Mr. Olgun referred to an ongoing “pre-negotiation” phase and added that “the pre-negotiation is the phase in which the rights and status of the parties are determined and confirmed before proceeding to substantive negotiations”.
“The Greek Cypriot side, due to its redemptive obsessions, refuses to recognize that the Turkish Cypriot side possesses and exercises sovereign rights and status. In addition, the Greek Cypriot side rejected the proposal for direct trade, flights and contacts,” argued Mr. Olgun, who added “the insistence of the Turkish Cypriot side to ensure the confirmation of political equality with the Greek Cypriot side, before the start of official content negotiations, is a requirement based on inherent equality”.
