Although Elizabeth first met Philip in 1934 at the royal wedding of Princess Marina, Philip's cousin, the war brought the then thirteen-year-old future queen closer to her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece and of Denmark, who was serving at the Royal Naval Academy at Dartmouth. Their meeting quickly led to a romantic teenage romance and four years later, when they met again at Balmoral, Philip proposed to her. She is said to have accepted immediately – without even consulting her father.

Despite the initial objections of her parents, due to the fact that Philip had neither financial power nor a kingdom of his own and at the same time, his sisters had married Germans with Nazi connections, their engagement was formalized on July 9, 1947. Having renounced their his Greek and Danish titles, Prince Philip was united in the holy bonds of matrimony at Westminster Abbey with Princess Elizabeth on November 20, 1947. Her stunning Norman Hartnell ivory satin wedding dress, chosen by her mother, included ten thousand pearls and was full of crystals, while its fifteen meter tail stole the show.

Everything seems to be going smoothly until February 6, 1952, when Elizabeth is informed of her father's death. From that moment on, her life changed forever. Despite the fact that in one of the episodes of the third series of “The Crown” it is mentioned that Elizabeth did not want to accept her new role, which her sister Margarita ardently desired and as a result she is thinking of giving it to her, this has not happened never confirmed. Instead, Elizabeth immediately assumed her duties.

On June 2, 1953, her coronation ceremony began, which was broadcast for the first time on television, and shortly thereafter, problems arose in her marriage. Philip had to give up his Navy career and, with no specific role to play, follow Elizabeth faithfully everywhere – a fact that infuriated him, as he could not be idle. Anger, according to accounts of the time, began to get the better of him and he quickly began to dabble in alleged extramarital affairs.

During those years, he was heavily rumored to have relationships with aristocrats and famous actresses, including Countess Penelope Knatchbull and the highly paid British actress Pat Kirkwood. Time however made the couple finally find their way and stay together until the end.
