Sunday's dive in Protaras almost proved fatal for two 21-year-old Greek Cypriots from the province of Larnaca.
The two friends were early today at Sykia beachto spend carefree moments, however the sequel was adventurous with one of them ending up in the hospital.
As reported to the Cyprus Times by 21-year-old Anthimos, one of the two bathers who were in danger , the terrain within the sea had ups and downs. “Where we were walking at some point we found ourselves in the deep. My friend doesn't know how to swim very well and he started to sink.”
Then the 21-year-old Anthimos grabbed him trying to keep him afloat. At the same time, he was calling for help and specifically, as he told us, he asked bathers to drop the inflatable bed they were holding so he could put his friend on it as his strength began to leave him.
Fortunately, his pleas were heard. Three bathers, two of them EAC employees, rushed to help. “They threw my cot. I picked up my friend and swam to land. I had no other powers. If they didn't listen to us, I don't know if we would have lasted any longer”.
The incident was also noticed at the lifeguard tower and a lifeguard went to the scene with a jet ski, who transported the bather who was in danger on land. An ambulance was called to the beach and transported the 21-year-old to the hospital of Famagusta where the necessary tests will be done.
Both bathers were conscious while their health condition is not at risk. However, today's summer dive will be unforgettable for them.
