A package of measures to support the T/k community that will at the same time strengthen the cooperation between the two communities but will also revive the hope for a solution to the Cyprus issue, AKEL sent to the President of the Republic .

As the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou stated today, in his statements on the sidelines of a bi-communal mobilization "We are opening new roads– Reuniting Cyprus», the package includes the establishment of an Office of Turkish Cypriot Affairs, the expansion of the Green Line Regulation  but also the establishment of a Support Fund for Bi-Community Initiatives.

In his statements today in the context of a bi-communal event on the opening of roadblocks, the General Secretary of AKEL noted that AKEL had requested at the recent session of the National Council to submit to the President of the Republic a package of proposals that will help, as he said, the Republic of Cyprus to address more clearly and more resoundingly, with specific messages to the Cypriot community, "that he considers them and they are part of the Cypriot people and that we want and desire the strengthening of relations between the two communities and we certainly remain steadfast in the unchanging goal of a solution to Cyprus».

As Mr. Stefanou added, AKEL has prepared this package and sent it a few days ago to the President of the Republic, while in the next few days it will also be released to the public.

“These measures we are proposing will upgrade the offer of the Republic of Cyprus to the Turkish community and will help to strengthen the hope for a solution”, said the General Secretary of AKEL, indicating that given that the Turkish community is under the hot breath of Turkey but also that a large part of the community no longer believes in the solution of the Cyprus problem, "we should strengthen both the hope for a solution and the prospect for a solution but also the trust between the two communities".

Stefanos Stefanou expressed the conviction that something like this is politically necessary, explaining that the preparation and sending of this package of measures to the PtD is moving in this context.

Asked to give more details regarding AKEL's proposals, Mr. Stefanou said that the package includes the proposal to create an Office of Turkish Cypriot Affairs “so that Turkish Cypriots can address this Office to promote issues” that concern them or for their affairs to be served by the Public Service, with a series of other measures that will strengthen the operation of this Office”. to address a basic problem faced by movements and organizations that want to develop policies of re-approach and contact with the Turkish community, which is finding financial resources.

He also said that the package also includes a series of measures concerning the expansion of the Green Line Regulation that regulates the movement of people, services and products and which is something that the EU is asking for and discussing.

"We consider “It is important that if the Republic of Cyprus comes forward, we decide rather than let others decide for us,” he said.

He added that the package of recommendations by AKEL also includes a series of measures in the fields of Education, Health, society in general» and which have arisen, as he explained, through dialogue and contact with organized T/C groups. T/k and they certainly facilitate contact, but they also send resounding messages on behalf of KD that we want to build trust and achieve a solution, he said.
