The Parliament approved a supplementary budget for the University of Cyprus amounting to €19,256,050 with 36 votes in favor, 4 against and 3 abstentions.
In particular, the amount concerns the carrying out of expenses for the implementation of various purposes concerning, among others, the employment of supporting teaching and research staff, the new professional plan of pension benefits, operating expenses and construction and improvement projects.
The Plenary rejected amendments by DIKO MPs Pavlos Mylonas, Chrysantho Savvidis and DIPA MP Alekos Tryfonidis for sequestration of funds.
Independent MP Andreas Themistokleous was particularly critical of the spending and management at the University of Cyprus, who suggested, among other things, that the Government appoint criminal investigators for the University's financial scandals.
DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis expressed concerns about the Auditor General's remarks and said that safety valves should be put in place for information.
AKEL Member of Parliament Christos Christofidis said that every year the University receives much less than its needs and that is why additional budgets keep coming. He also spoke of possible complications from amendments for funds.
Dipa MP Alekos Tryfonidis emphasized the need for the funds to be used for student residences in the midst of very high rents.
The MP of DISY Giorgos Karoullas said that the supplementary budget is necessary for the orderly operation of the University, while he was in favor of exhaustive control.
DISY MP Nikos Tornaritis asked not to underestimate the highest educational institution of the country and said that the Auditor General does not have the infallibility of the Pope.
