About 30,000 services to about 6,000 people (out of 14,000 patients, who are registered in the Institute's registry), provided in 2023, the Clinical Department of the Institute of Neurology & Cyprus Genetics (ING), while during the year, approximately 1,000 new cases of serious neurological and genetic diseases were diagnosed.
According to a press release that includes a brief account of the Institute's work for 2023, the Biomedical Laboratories of ING, in 2023, performed approximately 21,000 examinations following referrals from physicians of various specialties, contributing to the timely and accurate diagnosis of serious diseases for nearly 10,000 cases which concerned adults, children as well as prenatal examinations, while 23,000 forensic genetics services were also offered.
As noted, the Clinical Department consists of specialized Neurological Centers while services are also offered of neuropsychology and hematology, specialties which joined from the previous year, aiming at the continuous upgrading of the Institute's services to patients.
It should be noted that the Clinical Department consists of a neurological patient ward and the Day Care Unit which receives patients (of the ING) for their short-term treatment, a Physiotherapy Unit, a Pharmacy and a Social Services Office.
For the services provided by the Biomedical Laboratories of the Institute, it is stated that they concern the diagnosis of a wide range of serious diseases, offering pioneering diagnostic services of molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, molecular virology, etc., which are constantly evolving using the most modern technological methods.
Also based on the report in 2023, publications in scientific journals and books reached 95.
For the academic year 2023-2024, 36 Master students and 7 PhD students have been enrolled in the fields of Medical Genetics, Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience and Biomedical Research offered by the Institute.
The General Executive Director and Medical Director of ING Leonidas Phylaktos noted that “the uniqueness of the Institute to operate in three pillars related to the health sector is of outstanding importance”, as the research carried out in combined with the education provided and the parallel education of the new generation of scientists, contribute to the provision of better services to patients and society and to the development of the standard of living of Cyprus.
