Haris Papacharalambous is the new president at the helm of the Association of Travel Agents of Cyprus as of Tuesday, following the election process held within the annual general assembly of the association's members. Mr. Papacharalambous was until recently the press representative of the association. In his first statements after assuming his duties, the new president of Acta developed the association's priorities and the need to promote reforms so that the tourism product of Cyprus can be modernized.

Mr. Papacharalambous emphasized that we should not take tourism for granted, since the competition is huge. “Our priorities are the enrichment of our product, the modernization of legislation, the attraction of visitors from other markets, the development in other areas of tourism beyond the sun and the sea. All of this requires some infrastructure and modifications and we should be prepared for that, as he mentioned.

A huge issue is the seasonality of tourism, something that also affects the quality we offer as he mentioned, it affects the cost, of course there are objective difficulties but clearly step by step we can achieve it, at least in most areas. It just needs a long-term planning and some changes are needed, since there are serious weaknesses. He also mentioned that one of the biggest challenges is the cost of energy for air transport, a cost that affects both outbound and inbound tourism.
“We will be close to our members to be able to be involved in the field of reforms and of the changes and to initiate reforms that are imposed to help the industry”.

It is noted that, during the general meeting on Tuesday, 11 members were elected who will make up the new Board of Directors of the association, which will be established in a body on coming days.
