The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Costas Kadis assured the Cypriot consumers that there is a sufficiency of good quality lambs and at very low prices, adding that consumers “have nothing to fear”.
At the same time , in statements during his visits to supermarkets in view of the Easter holidays, Mr. Kadis stressed that the Government supported with € 5 million the sheep and goat farmers, who did not pass the huge fodder in the rest of the agri-food chain.

“The supply is sufficient, we have the Cypriot lambs which are at very low prices and that was the fact, if you will, that led the government to support the sheep and goat farmers. “While we have had huge increases in the cost of lamb production, with increases in feed of 70%, we do not see this cost being passed on to the entire agri-food chain,” said Mr. Kadis in his statements.
“What does this mean?”, He continued, “means that the sheep and goat farmer bears all this burden of feed increases. That is why the Government considered it appropriate to support our sheep and goat farmers with an amount of € 5 million, in order to give time to the market to operate and distribute evenly, I would say, the costs throughout the agri-food chain. But there is certainly no question of adequacy. “
Mr. Kadis also pointed out that this year there is a relatively small increase in the consumption of Cypriot lambs, especially due to the low price, compared to the Greek lamb, which is sold at higher prices, which is why the import of Greek lambs was limited this year. p>
Answering a question, the Minister of Agriculture attributed the reduced import of Greek lambs to the more expensive costs due to the high transport costs.
“Therefore, all this contributes to having much higher prices on imported products, without in any case our Cypriot products lag behind in anything. The Cypriot products are excellent in terms of quality and this is shown by the inspections that we carry out throughout Cyprus “, he added.
The Minister of Agriculture noted that the intensive inspections have started from the 16th of the month and from the premises production up to the meat disposal areas and will continue until the end of the month.
As for the orchards, Mr. Kadis said that they present a similar picture and that no problems have been presented and recorded, either in terms of adequacy or in terms of quality.
“Therefore, what I would say “I would advise Cypriot consumers to be careful in their markets, to buy from approved points of sale, whether meat products or perishables, and they have nothing to fear, they can choose high quality products and have them at the Easter table”, he concluded.

Given the growing interest of consumers in eggs, in view of the days of Easter, the Department of Agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, provides information on current legislation on standardization and marketing of eggs. In this regard, it is stated that important information about the production of eggs is written on their shell, such as the country of production (CY for eggs produced in Cyprus), the method of breeding chickens, the province of establishment of the production unit, etc. The provisions of the Legislation are described in detail in an information leaflet prepared by the Department of Agriculture and posted on its website. In addition, the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services and Health Services have issued a Joint Information Form indications required on the packaging of Class A eggs available for sale to the consumer and available here. As is well known, the European Union is a single geographical area in which people, products, services and capital move freely, for the purposes of healthy competition and consumer protection. Similar products distributed in the Member States of the Union are standardized on the basis of uniform specifications in order to ensure an acceptable level of quality for the consumer. Thus, he is able to compare similar products and choose according to his preferences. The marketing standards governing the marketing of eggs are based on legislation that is in line with the acquis and implemented by the Department of Agriculture. The Egg Trade Specification Law of 2016 (L.103 (I)/2016), has been enacted for the purposes of implementing Regulations (EU) no. 1308/2013 and (EC) no. 589/2008. The Law contains the definitions, the purpose, the object of the Legislation, the enforcement bodies, the competencies and the powers of the Competent Authority (Department of Agriculture) and its Inspectors. Also included are offenses, administrative sanctions, fines and penalties for offenders, as well as information on the egg packing center approval process. & Nbsp; Provisions of the Legislation the breeding Object of L.103 (I)/2016 are only the eggs produced by chickens belonging to the species Gallusgallus , that is, common hens. It is understood that the shell of the eggs must not be broken, nor have they been incubated or boiled and are suitable for immediate human consumption or for the preparation of egg-based products. The Law provides for the possibility of classification, marking and marketing of eggs produced in alternative poultry farming systems (barn or laying eggs, free-range eggs and organically produced eggs) and in arranged cages. & Nbsp; Egg packing center approval Egg laying, sorting, marking and packaging establishments must have obtained prior approval of an egg packing center by the Competent Authority, upon request. The application is evaluated and an approval of an egg packing center is issued if it is found, after a relevant inspection, that the installation has the technical equipment required for the proper handling of eggs and the necessary certificates have been presented confirming the legality of the operation. Approved egg packing centers are assigned a code, which is written on the egg packs. In the event that the conditions under which the approval was granted or the conditions for the necessary technical equipment required for the proper handling of the eggs are not met, the Competent Authority may revoke the approval. Provisions of the Legislation for the classification of eggs Eggs are classified according to their quality characteristics in category A or category B. Class A eggs can be sold at retail outlets and catering establishments while category B eggs are intended only for the food and non-food industry. industry. & nbsp; Class A eggs must have the following quality characteristics: a. the shell and the membrane should be regular in shape and intact, b. the air chamber must not be more than 6 mm high and for eggs marked “extremely” or “extremely fresh” must not exceed 4 mm, c. the yolk should be visible during ovulation only in the form of a shadow, move slightly as the egg rotates and return to its position, d. the egg white should be bright and clear, e. the growth of the stem disc is imperceptible, f. have no foreign matter, g. have no foreign odors. Class A eggs are classified by weight into the following categories: S – small: weight less than 53g, M – medium: weight equal to or greater than 53g and less than 63g, L – large: weight equal to or greater than 63g and less than 73g, XL – very large: weight greater than 73g. & nbsp; Provisions of Marking Legislation The's egg shell must contain the producer code consisting of 7 groups of digits in which the Latin characters CY (Cypriot insignia) are inserted [(i) CY. (Ii) (iii) (iv) (v) . ( iii) Province of installation where: 1 = Nicosia 2 = Kyrenia 3 = Famagusta 4 = Larnaca 5 Limassol 6 = Paphos (iv) and (v) Serial number of egg packing center (vi ) and (vii) Production Unit Identification Number . Class A eggs are marked, graded and packaged within 10 days of laying. The outer surface of the packages of Class A eggs available for sale to consumers must be clearly and legibly marked: (a) & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; The packaging center code, (b) & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; The quality category: “Category A” or the letter “A” in combination or not with the phrase “fresh eggs”. When eggs are labeled, sorted and packaged within 4 days of the spawning date, the expressions 'extremely' or 'extremely fresh' may be used as an additional indication of quality.
