Advice and information from the Ministry of Health on smallpox

Information about the new disease that is spreading in Europe in recent days is given by the Ministry of Health, with a relevant announcement.

What is smallpox of monkeys?

Smallpox is a rare viral infection caused by a virus related to the human smallpox virus and most commonly occurs in tropical areas of Central and West Africa. It was so named because it was first discovered in ape in the late 1950s, when the first human case occurred in 1970.

What are the ways the disease is transmitted?

Primary transmission is mainly described through contact with infected wildlife (primates or rodents) in Central and West Africa or with infected pets.

Cases of secondary human-to-human transmission are described through the respiratory tract after inhalation of large droplets, as well as by contact with the patient's skin lesions or contaminated objects (eg bed linen or towels used by a patient). In any case, human-to-human transmission of the disease is considered low.

Is there a risk of infection from pets?

There have been cases of transmission of the disease from pets in the past, but after contact of these animals with infected animals from Central or West Africa. So this risk for our country is extremely small.

How does the disease manifest itself?

The majority of people infected with the virus have no symptoms. For people who will show these symptoms appear 5-21 days after the infection (usually around the 12th day). These may include fever, headache, myalgias, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills and weakness. One to three days after the fever, a characteristic rash appears first as spots and papules, which develop into blisters and blisters and then into crusts that eventually subside. It is located first on the head and face and then extends to the torso and limbs, including the palms and soles. It is noted that in some of the recent cases in Europe the rash was first observed in the perinatal area and then spread to other parts of the body.

What is the treatment for monkey pox?

· Treatment is usually symptomatic. Most patients recover in 2-4 weeks.

· Hospitalization may be needed to treat the symptoms or prevent the disease from spreading.

I can protect myself from the disease?

· I can apply some obvious rules. The most important thing is to avoid direct or indirect contact with people who show symptoms of the disease. I must also follow the basic hygiene measures (regular hand washing with soap and water or use of an alcoholic antiseptic). Clearly if I travel to Central or West African countries I avoid contact with wildlife.

When do I need to contact my personal doctor?

· It is considered very remote if you have not recently traveled to Central or West Africa or if you have not been in close contact with someone suffering from the disease.

However, contact your personal physician if you have blistering rash and: a) You have returned from West or Central Africa in the last 3 weeks, b) You have been in contact with someone who has had monkey pox in the last 3 weeks, c) You have been in contact with someone who has had suspected skin damage in the last 3 weeks.
