AEGEAN and CAE, the world leader in aviation training for pilots and cabin crew, jointly support the establishment of the most advanced and “green” Flight Simulator and Crew Training Center in SE Europe.
AEGEAN, Greece's largest airline, and CAE, the world's leading company in aviation training for pilots and cabin crew, today announced their cooperation in the form of a joint venture (Joint Venture), to create the first modern Simulator Center Flight and Crew Training in Greece. With a capacity of up to 7 full flight simulators, the AEGEAN – CAE training center will be part of the new AEGEAN Technical Base of a total area of 85,000 m2 that will be created at the Athens International Airport.

The new AEGEAN and CAE Training Center is expected to be operational by the end of 2023 and will be the most technologically upgraded and modern aviation training hub in Southeast Europe. In the first stage of development the Training Center will have four flight simulators, including two Airbus A320neo, one Boeing 737NG and one ATR 72-600, as well as cabin crew training equipment, while it foresees the installation of three additional simulators. At full development, the center will be able to train up to 3,500 pilots a year (42,000 training hours) and many times that number of cabin crew.
The creation of the new AEGEAN and CAE Training Center is part of AEGEAN's overall €140 million investment in creating a modern air transport ecosystem in Greece, announced at the end of last year, while further expanding the already significant global network of CAE training centers.
It is noted that for its operation the Flight Simulator and Crew Training Center of AEGEAN and CAE will consume green energy which will be produced by the installation of 35,000 m2 of photovoltaic panels of total power 3 MW or 4.4 GWh per year, which will be located in the new technical base of AEGEAN.
Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of AEGEAN, said: “We are very pleased to announce today this important collaboration with CAE, the world's leading company in the aviation training industry for pilots and cabin crew, to create the first modern Flight Simulator Center and Crew Training in Greece. From the beginning of our operation, AEGEAN's vision has been to create value for the industry and our country, which is why the creation of our new joint training center enables both our people and third party crews companies, to develop skills and develop their capabilities. With this agreement, AEGEAN and CAE are joining forces, know-how, but also our common values, to create the most modern and comprehensive pilot and cabin crew training center in Southeast Europe. An investment that offers unlimited possibilities to our people, while expanding the development prospects for the aviation industry, but also for the country as a whole”.
Nick Leontidis, Group President, Civil Aviation at CAE noted: “We are extremely pleased to be working with AEGEAN to create the most advanced aviation training center in South East Europe and to expand our network of centers around the world. With AEGEAN we share the same values and look forward to joining forces to further develop the aviation workforce by offering the most thorough, quality and upgraded training experience for pilots and cabin crew. As an integral part of the new, modern ecosystem for air transport in Greece, which is being created at the initiative of AEGEAN, we look forward both to a successful cooperation with the company and its people, and to the development of air transport in the region as a whole”.
About the first modern ecosystem of support services for air transport in Greece
In December 2022, AEGEAN announced an investment of 140 million euros to create the first modern Aircraft Maintenance Service Center and the first Flight Simulator and Crew Training Center in Greece, in one of the first “green” Hangars in Europe. An investment that, upon maturity, is expected to create up to 500 new direct and a total of more than 1,100 new direct and indirect highly skilled jobs over a period of five to seven years.
With a total area of 85,000 m2 the first modern ecosystem of air transport support services in Greece will fill a significant gap in infrastructure at the local level for third party support services through two main parallel activities:
• The aircraft maintenance function, with the development and gradual staffing of the technical base, with a final capacity of up to 10 heavy maintenance, repairs and checks for various types of aircraft.
• The development of the Flight Simulators and Crew Training Center with an investment in a total of 7 state-of-the-art flight simulators, which will cover training needs for Airbus, ATR and Boeing aircraft, as well as the creation of facilities for carrying out special cabin crew training.
The already existing Olympic Air Engineering Training School, with a strong operating tradition, will also join the same ecosystem, as well as the AEGEAN Pilot Training Organization, which is already operating.
At the same time, the investment foresees the energy upgrade of the building facilities, through the placement of 35,000 m2 photovoltaic panels, 3 MW power, on the building shell, with the aim of meeting their energy needs and creating one of the first “green” hangars in Europe. inside one of the greenest airports in Europe.
