The Taliban announced today a complete ban on the use of foreign exchange in Afghanistan.
“The country's economic situation and national interests require all Afghans to use the Afghan currency in all their trade,” the ruling Islamist group said in a statement shared with reporters by a Taliban spokesman.
The use of US dollars is widespread in Afghanistan, while in border areas residents use the currencies of neighboring countries, such as Pakistan, for their trade.
