Agreement of the Minister of Transport – Municipality of Limassol for sustainable urban mobility

A cooperation agreement was signed on Tuesday between the Department of Public Works and the Municipality of Germasogeia, for the development of parking management information systems connected to the bus telematics systems, so as to encourage the use of parking spaces by citizens for their private vehicles and their subsequent boarding on the buses.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos and the Mayor Kyriakos Xydias, at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Germasogeia, in the presence of representatives of the Department of Public Works and the municipal authorities.

Specifically, with the signing of the agreement, the Ministry of Transport undertakes to finance, with approximately 30 thousand euros, the interconnection of the Information System for the management of the available parking spaces of the Municipality of Germasogeia (on street and off street parking) and the system of shared bicycles available in Municipality, with the existing telematics system for Public Transport.

Mr. Karousos stated that the implementation of such projects aims to achieve multimodality in transport, with the use of mature technologies, which his Ministry promotes, while he congratulated the Mayor and the municipal council of Germasogeia for the positive attitude they are taking against policies for sustainable urban mobility.

"Today's agreement is the first of its kind in our country and we aim to make it to other local authorities as well, if it succeeds", said the Minister and expressed the position that the issues of sustainable urban mobility will be a priority for the municipal authorities, but also that, "their success will depend, not on the Ministry, but on the Mayors and the municipal councils".

Mayor Kyriakos Xydias expressed his thanks to the Ministry and the Department of Public Works, indicating that through the cooperation of recent years, several infrastructure projects have been carried out and are being planned. , "the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works actively supports Sustainable Urban Mobility, the design of which means a change in the everyday life and culture of citizens".

"With the completion of the preparation of the Limassol PES study and with the funding we have secured through the Recovery and Resilience Fund, we are on the way to the mid-term implementation of projects and actions for a more sustainable Limassol and undoubtedly a more ecological, more resilient city and with socially equal structures”, it is added.

Limassol, continues the announcement, "will meet the goals of sustainable development and social cohesion, and will constantly improve the living conditions and daily life of its residents" .

It is also noted that the Ministry, by signing today's agreement with the Municipality of Germasogeia, "shows in practice that it supports this new perspective for the joint implementation of actions with all partners". indicating that "the goal of all of us should be cities that are greener, cleaner, safer, more functional and more accessible for everyone".
