Hundreds of people, with banners and slogans, marched on Saturday morning from the Interior Ministry to the Presidential Palace, demanding the rejection of the revised Akamas Local Plan.

With whistles, percussion, banners and slogans such as, “It will not pass, we want the forests”, “Akamas belongs to our children”, “S.O.S, sea caves”, and “Leave Akamas untouched”, protesters took part in the “March” Akamas, Zero Hour '”organized by the Natural Coast Rescue Initiative and the Save Akamas/Save Cyprus Movement.

The protesters gathered outside the Ministry of Interior and marched to the Presidential Palace, where they stayed for about 30 minutes before starting, at 11:55, a march back to the Ministry of Interior, where the protest would end.

< p class = "text-paragraph">One of the organizers announced during the event that they will continue their activities until the revised Local Plan for Akamas is rejected.

In a statement, the organizers say they consider the Akama Revised Local Plan “completely incompatible with the goals of preserving our common natural and cultural heritage, as well as the sustainable development of the communities of the Akama Peninsula.”

“We demand the rejection of the Revised Akamas Local Plan, so that the Town Planning Council and the Department of Urban Planning and Housing can immediately proceed with the complete revision and radical modification of several important proposed provisions, policy measures and urban planning. “, It is reported.

The announcement states that the revised Akama Local Plan, “promotes the scattered construction and uncontrolled development, through the policies of construction of individual house and visitable farm, the location of three specialized development areas near the Gorges of Androlikos, the Rocks of Ineia and the Gorges of Arodes and Kathika, as well as the creation of a new Quarry in the Gorges of Androlikos and Tourist Zone in the Rocks of Ineia “.

And all this, it is added, despite the fact that the specific provisions have already been rejected by the Opinion issued by the Department of Environment in October 2021, while at the same time the reports of the competent authorities and environmental organizations prove , beyond any reasonable doubt and scientific reservation, that they will have serious, negative, cumulative and irreversible effects on the natural environment and the unique landscape of the Akama Peninsula.
