Today, August 15, marks the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Cyprus. The completion of 95 years since the founding of the Communist Party of Cyprus is a milestone in the course of our place and our people. On the occasion of the anniversary, AKEL honors with respect the memory and the contribution of all the pioneer fighters who founded, established and raised the People's Party. It addresses to the thousands of AKELists a message of vigilance and counterattack for the struggles ahead of us. struggles for our country and our people. At the same time, we are sending a message of unity and solidarity to the world of the wider Left, to the democratic and progressive citizens of our country, in order to chart a different course together, a course of progress for the Cyprus of the future.
The 15th of August 1926 intersects the History of Cyprus because it gave birth to the Party of the working class and the working people of Cyprus. Against colonialism, local plutocracy and usury, the CCP spoke and fought for what no one had spoken of and fought for until then. It was the first time in the history of the place that a voice spoke about the people and poverty as the protagonist of the struggles and history. The first voice that sowed in the Cypriot society the revolutionary vision of socialism, the communist ideas, the ideals of internationalism and peace. The first force on the island to fight for the formation of a united front of Greeks and Turks of Cyprus against British colonialism. He was the founder, the mind and the soul of the labor movement that set up unions all over the island and organized the first workers' struggles for part-time work, eight hours, social security. The CCP made revolutionary demands for the time, such as gender equality and the protection of motherhood, the prohibition of child labor and free education, the distribution of ecclesiastical and vacant land to the homeless, and the writing off of the debts of the expropriated peasantry. It united the progressive intellectuals and artists with the workers in the organized struggle and at the same time, inspired a movement of culture and education that clashed with the ignorance and religious darkness of the time.
Almost a century now, our Party, as the CCP in the beginning and as AKEL afterwards, has gone through trials like no other power in the country. murders, persecutions, imprisonments, twice in illegality, organized slander, defeats and setbacks. However, he always managed to overcome the trials every time because he was and is tied to the people and he is only accountable to them. Because he had and still has the power to recognize and correct mistakes and weaknesses. To enter in front of the struggles of the time, in the modern demands of the employees and the new generation. To respond boldly and optimistically to the challenges of the time.
