AKEL for preservation: The cultural heritage of Cyprus is not the property of the Archbishop

AKEL's announcement is in strong style, after the revelation that the Archdiocese proceeded with the demolition of listed buildings in the walled city of Nicosia. In its announcement, the party states, among other things, that it demands from the government and the competent departments to terminate all work in the area and the Archbishop to restore the buildings, as provided by law. “The cultural heritage of Cyprus is not the property of the Archbishop!” is emphasized.

The announcement of AKEL

Today at noon, the Archbishop sent bulldozers and demolished listed buildings located on the site of the cathedral in the center of Nicosia. An illegal and arbitrary act that is a brutal provocation to the detriment of society as a whole.
We remind you that the Archbishop pledged to the Municipality of Nicosia to maintain the buildings. This commitment was the alibi for the majority of the Municipal Council to grant permission for the construction of the cathedral.
The demolition of listed buildings is the new cultural crime with the seal of the Archbishop. Others preceded the culmination of the declassification of an ancient monument in Geroskipou by the Council of Ministers in order to build a luxury hotel of the Archdiocese. This arbitrariness of the Archbishop is due to the Anastasiadis-Alarm government, which nurtured his arbitrariness and illegalities by willingly fulfilling all his demands.

We demand from the government and the competent departments to finish all work on the site and the Archbishop to restore the buildings, as provided by law. The cultural heritage of Cyprus is not the property of the Archbishop!
