Following the publication of the investigation (Pandora Papers) of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and the reports on the Republic of Cyprus, AKEL will submit next Thursday issue for ex-officio examination to the Parliamentary Audit Committee.
In particular, information will be requested on the possible actions taken or intended to be taken by the competent authorities of the Republic in relation to the results of the publication of the investigation (Pandora Papers), as well as the position of the Republic of Cyprus regarding the forthcoming legislative European Commission initiatives to combat tax evasion, tax evasion and money laundering.
In addition, according to an announcement, the Parliamentary Representative of AKEL, George Loukaidis, today sent a letter to the Minister of Finance, requesting re-information on the position of the Government on the issue of providing multiple pensions to former and current officials and for the intention of the Government regarding the preparation and submission of a relevant bill to the House of Representatives.
The letter, according to the announcement issued by AKEL, reiterates the party's position that the issue should be resolved immediately and definitively, in a way that abolishes the existing system of multiple pensions, while maintaining the right to retire from the Social insurance Fund.
The letter is attached as follows:
“We return to the particularly important issue of the multiple pensions of former and current officials of the Republic, the regulation of which is pending and we ask you to be informed about the position of the Government on the issue.
Given the decision of the Supreme Court in 2014 to consider the then passed legislation as unconstitutional and having in mind that a possible settlement of the issue by legislative initiative of the Parliament or the parliamentary parties carries increased risks in terms of its constitutionality, we consider that the safest A final settlement of the issue can only come through the preparation of a government bill, after a thorough legislative elaboration by the Legal Service, in order to deal more effectively with the unconstitutional points pointed out in the relevant decision of the Supreme Court.
On this occasion, I convey to you again the position of AKEL that the issue should be resolved immediately and definitively, in a way that abolishes the existing system of multiple pensions, while maintaining the right to retire from the Social Insurance Fund.
Therefore, please inform us immediately and specifically about the intention of the Government regarding the preparation and submission of a relevant bill to the House of Representatives “.
