AKEL proceeded to remove all the party positions of the former Limassol MP and party leader, Giannou Lamaris.
According to an article in the newspaper “Alithia”, the reason for this decision was Mr. Lamaris' refusal to pay the party the lump sum from his term as an MP.
Consultations were held between the two sides in the previous period, however Mr. Lamaris refused to return the amount, with the Party Bodies deciding to remove all his party positions in the Politburo and the Central Committee.
In his statements to politis.com.cy, Mr. Lamaris confirming the information, noted that his disagreement with AKEL is economic and not ideological. He also clarified that he remains a member of the party. For more information on this issue, Mr. Lamaris referred to the competent bodies of the party.
The news was confirmed in her statements to “Politis 107.6” by the AKEL MP, Eleni Mavrou.
It is recalled that a similar issue had arisen in 2016 with Nikos Katsouridis, who also refused to pay the parliamentary lump sum to the AKEL funds. AKEL has since been discussing with its former MP the lump sum payment, with the threat of expulsion from the party in case the former MP does not comply with the party's regulations.
We remind you that Mr. Katsouridis, after the Dromolaxia scandal, was fired indefinitely by AKEL.
Mr. Katsouridis had then claimed that even the former general secretary of the party, Dimitris Christofias, had not submitted his lump sum, something that Andros Kyprianou denied at the last congress of the party.
We remind you that AKEL has had similar problems with former MPs in terms of the payment of the lump sum, in the past most of which have been deleted.
