Until 9/3/22, the international oil price was constantly rising, reaching $ 138 a barrel that day. In the first days of March and within 5 days, the retail prices of fuel in Cyprus, went up 2 times. In fact, the price of diesel had risen by 27 cents. We remind you that at a meeting of the Energy Committee in 2019, the Assistant Auditor General had stated that a one cent increase in prices per year, brings additional profits of about 8m. Euros to the companies.
Then we shouted, that it is possible that within 5 days the companies had ordered 2 shipments from abroad and came to Cyprus.
From 10/3/22, the price of oil internationally, fell sharply and since then has hovered around $ 108 a barrel. And while prices were expected to fall, as they did across Europe, in Cyprus prices are constantly rising, as shown below:

We reminded again that during the previous government, the price of oil internationally had risen to $ 140 a barrel and the price of unleaded 95 octane gasoline in Cyprus had risen to & nbsp; € 1.40 per liter. We asked how it is possible today that the price of oil internationally is at 115 dollars per barrel, the price of unleaded in Cyprus to reach up to € 1.87 per liter and even after a reduction of excise tax by 5 cents a few years ago and now 8.3 cents?
We asked the competent Ministry for the umpteenth time:
– Why does it not implement the suggestions of its own study of 2015, to create conditions of competition , which is non-existent today?
– Why does it continue to impose unacceptable VAT on Consumption Tax and reject the bill we have tabled to remove this illegality?
– Why does it not promote LPG, with incentives such as the system installation subsidy, to give citizens the opportunity to get a cheaper fuel, with an excise tax of only 7 cents per liter?
– Why did he never use the decree setting the maximum retail price (ceiling), even though the gaps in the process have now been closed and new criteria have been set? We once again asked the President of the Commission to discuss our bill, which improves the legislation.
– Why does not check the profitability of companies to see if they really make a profit and present us the results of the inquiry in a closed session of the Commission, as we as a party have repeatedly requested?
– Why are there no checks when receiving a new load of fuel at service stations to check the stock in the service station tanks and calculate the average sale?
We also reminded that, due to the incredible sloppiness and inaction of the government, we did not meet the target of 10% set by the EU. for transport until 2020 and that today we are at 7.5% and this after the mandatory mixing of biofuels in motor fuels by decree of the Minister of Energy, a decision which has increased prices by 10 to 13 cents per liter.

– Many gas station owners have contacted us and informed us that as soon as cargo purchased at higher prices arrives, their companies inform them that from the same night they must increase the retail selling prices regardless of the stock they have in the tanks of their gas stations, which they will now sell at the new prices. Let me remind you that the government to this day insists that what we have been shouting for years, that is, the feather and rocket phenomenon, does not apply in Cyprus.
– We mentioned that there are mechanisms for market manipulation by companies, citing specific examples, something that the PSC had identified in its latest decision on vertical price manipulation. We remind you that 85% of the gas stations are controlled by the companies
