Ambassador of Russia: The 5 permanent members of the SA try to help the Secretary General for the special envoy

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council are discussing the issue of the UN special envoy for the Cyprus issue and are trying to help the UN Secretary-General resolve it as soon as possible, because negotiations need to continue, the ambassador said. Of the Russian Federation in Cyprus, Stanislav Osaci.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the sculpture in Ayia Napa, and answering questions from journalists, Mr. Osatsi said that the system of guarantees in Cyprus is outdated and that the Security Council must be the guarantor of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Asked about Russia's position on the issue of the special envoy, Mr. Osaci said that “we are in favor of the continuation of this mission of the special envoy to Cyprus. We think it's great. “Both sides must sit at the negotiating table, assisted by the special representative, who will be in charge of the UN Security Council.” “This is the main thing, to have a mandate from the Security Council to act as a representative, which has the authority to contribute to the resolution of the Cyprus problem,” he added.

Asked about Russia's position on the issue of guarantees, Mr Osaci said: “Russia's position is that guarantees must be Security Council guarantees. The outdated guarantees you have in Cyprus are no longer valid because they do not contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem. “We think the Security Council should be the guarantor of the solution.”

Asked to comment on the Turkish provocations in Famagusta and the Cypriot EEZ, the Russian Ambassador stressed that “we are in favor of the implementation of all United Nations resolutions on Famagusta, and we think that Turkey can not act unilaterally in this area.”

He added that “Cyprus has the right to have the EEZ trial and that Turkey has this in mind”.

Asked about Turkey's challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, Mr Osaci said “Russia is in favor of the application of international law in this area, and Turkey should take this into account.”

Asked if Russia could take any initiative to help appoint a UN special envoy for Cyprus, Mr Osatsi said: “The five permanent members of the Security Council are talking about this and we are trying to help them. “The Secretary-General of the United Nations must resolve this issue as soon as possible because the negotiations need to continue.”
