The President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, expressed his concern about the delay in the completion of the infrastructure for the arrival of liquefied natural gas in Cyprus, asking both DEFA and the Minister of Energy to closely monitor the developments in the implementation of the infrastructure. as well as gas supply.
At the same time, President Anastasiadis called for the acceleration of the procedures, as the works for the infrastructure projects are expected to be completed in July 2023, with a delay of nine months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
President Anastasiadis was briefed by the President of DEFA, Nikos Kastellani on the progress in the implementation of infrastructure projects for the arrival of liquefied natural gas. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasa Pileidou and the Minister of Finance Konstantinos Petridis.
According to the announcement, the President of DEFA briefed the President on its activities, as well as on the progress made in relation to the development of liquefied natural gas import infrastructure in Vasiliko, a project which is being implemented by a subsidiary of DEFA, the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA).
President Anastasiadis was informed, among other things, about the estimated 9-month delay in the implementation of the project brought about by the pandemic, due to the restrictions imposed on the movement of people and the operation of construction sites as well as the lack / reduced availability of specific raw materials.
The project is expected to be completed in July 2023, as previously announced, it is reported.
“The President of the Republic expressed his concern about the observed delay, requesting from both DEFA and the Ministry of Energy, close monitoring of the developments in relation to the progress of the infrastructure implementation works, as well as the supply of natural gas”, says the Presidency and concludes by noting that President Anastasiadis called for the acceleration of the procedures.
