And officially the new Minister of Justice, George Savvidis

Confirming the rumors of the last few days, the President officially announced today that George Savvidis will be the new Minister of Justice.

Mr. Savvidis, a lawyer by profession, deals with maritime law and shipping issues and is the son of the former Supreme Court Judge, Loukis Savvidis. In the past, he maintained a law firm together with Markos Kyprianou.

The assurance ceremony of the new minister will take place tomorrow at 10:30 at the Presidential Palace.

In his statements, the President of the Republic expressed his regret for the departure of Ionas Nikolaou, who, as he said, was for years a close associate of his and “one of the most hard-working ministers”.

At the same time, the President called on the Parliament to adopt the bills presented today by Mr. Nikolaou at the Presidential Palace and concerning the reform of the justice system.

When he left the presidency, Ionas Nikolaou, when asked about how he feels about handing over his portfolio to the Ministry of Justice, said he was shocked.

The Presidency of the Republic published the biographical note of the new Minister of Justice, George Savvidis.

He was born on 22.09.1959, comes from Famagusta and is the son of a. former Judge of the Supreme Court Loukis and a. Iroulas Savvidou. He graduated from the Primary School of Agios Ioannis Famagusta and attended the Famagusta Boys' High School until he was 15, when his family was displaced due to the barbaric Turkish Invasion. He graduated as a flag bearer of the Laniteio High School in Limassol in 1977.

After completing his military service, he studied law at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom where he received his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. Hons,) and was later promoted to Barrister at Middle Temple. After completing his internship and having excelled in the bar exams, in 1984 he established his own law firm in Limassol which soon became a cooperative and then evolved into the law firm Georgios L. Savvidis & Co. DEPE whose is a CEO. The company maintains offices in Limassol and Nicosia.

He has been practicing law for 35 years and is a member of the Pancyprian Bar Association and the Famagusta Bar Association.

He was the Secretary of the Gymnastics Association of EVAGORAS (GSE) Famagusta, with whose jersey he had become a Panhellenic and holder of a Pancyprian performance in the High Jump. He is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA) and has served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of various IBA subcommittees such as the Eastern European Forum and the Subcommittee on Law Office Management. Organized an international IBA conference in Cyprus. He was invited and gave lectures on legal issues in Cyprus and in many foreign countries.

He is married to Dora and has three children, Loukis Nikolas and Lora.
