Andros Kyprianou is not reclaiming the position of General Secretary of AKEL, noting that this is a decision he took a few months ago.
Speaking to RIK and on the show “Challenges”, Mr. Kyprianou indicated that the Politburo accepted his proposal not to reclaim the position of AKEL Secretary General at the upcoming Party Congress. Regarding the responsibilities for the election result, he noted that the Politburo unanimously decided that the responsibilities were collective in a marathon session that lasted eight hours. “But I, as the first among equals, have my own responsibilities”, said Andros Kyprianou.

Asked to answer why he did not submit his resignation after the election result, the AKEL General Secretary noted that, among other things, he heard that he should resign from the first day, noting that such a thing would be criminal at such a critical moment would lead to the party in introversion.
