“We stand tirelessly in every direction that our goal was and remains the achievement of a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of international law, the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the European authorities,” he added.

“We will never accept such unacceptable positions, which, after all, are explicitly rejected by the United Nations, the European Union and the entire international community,” he said, adding that “Turkey is building new ones on land and at sea.”

In her address to the Plenary Session of the National Assembly of Serbia, the Speaker of the Parliament reaffirmed “the position of the authorities and the firm support of the Republic of Cyprus in full respect of the sovereign rights and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia”, emphasizing that debt and a clear position of the Republic of Cyprus is the non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo “.

“The legal basis for resolving the issue remains the UN Security Council Resolution 1244/99 on the status of Kosovo,” he said, stressing that “in the absence of a mutually acceptable solution to the issue of regional status, the unilateral declaration of independence Kosovo is still illegal. “

In addition, the Speaker of the Parliament welcomed the progress made by Serbia in the framework of its accession negotiations and stressed that as a Member State of the European Union, the Republic of Cyprus supports and will continue to support Serbia's European perspective, while expressing confidence that Serbia will be a member of the European family.

“For Cyprus, Serbia's accession to the European Union is a precondition for consolidating stability in the Balkans, which is inextricably linked to security and stability in Europe, and we support this position within the Union's institutions,” he said. In this process, Serbia will “always have an honest, selfless and stable ambassador, who sincerely believes that Serbia's future can only be a European one and, of course, a reliable partner after accession”.

Ms. Dimitriou also assured of the readiness of the House of Representatives to provide Serbia with the expertise it has gained in matters of harmonization with the European acquis, in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between our two Parliaments in 2018.
