A small inconvenience to a small number of mothers with a second or third child, whose maternity leave normally expired yesterday, was caused by the delay in the publication of the relevant legislation, which extends the leave and the relevant allowance for another month in case of a second child and for two more in cases of a third and each additional child.
The amendment in this direction was approved unanimously on Thursday afternoon by the House of Representatives, however until noon yesterday it was not published in the Official Gazette of the Republic. This finally happened at three in the afternoon and was followed by a relevant announcement of the Ministry of Labor, clarifying the picture and reassuring the mothers whose leave expired yesterday. Specifically, the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Insurance informed the mothers who are on maternity leave during the week ending Sunday, November 7, 2021 that after the publication, yesterday, of the relevant change in the legislation, the maternity leave is increased by 4 weeks, if it is a second childbirth or the acquisition of a second child by adoption or by a surrogate mother, and by 8 weeks if it is a third or subsequent birth or the acquisition of a third or subsequent child by adoption or by a surrogate mother.
The corresponding maternity allowance will continue to be paid to the mother, in accordance with the provisions of the Social Security Laws of 2010-2021, as long as she continues to be on maternity leave for these additional periods, the ministry continued, clarifying that in these cases A new application must be submitted to the Social Security Services, in order to continue the payment of the maternity allowance.
