Today is characterized as extremely important for the Air Traffic Control Services of the Republic of Cyprus, as it marks the beginning of the provision of Surveillance Approach Service at Larnaca Airport (Approach Radar Service). According to an announcement by the Ministry of Transport, the service was launched in the presence of the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Stavros Michael. The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Giannis Karousos welcomed the event online.

The implementation of the project became possible after the initiative of the Minister of Transport and consultations that led to the signing by the Director of the Civil Aviation Department Mrs. Panagiota Dimitriou and the Commander of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Service Mr. George Dritsakos on September 20 Provision of know-how and training of Cypriot Air Traffic Controllers by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority.

The Larnaca Airport Surveillance Service (approach radar) is expected to significantly improve both the security levels and the efficiency levels of the services offered by the Control Tower, as the aircraft will be monitored until landing by surveillance systems. (radar). The Air Traffic Controller will have a complete and accurate picture of the traffic in the Airport terminal area, an area that extends within a radius of about 60 nautical miles around the Airport, thus making the separation of aircraft more efficient and effective, while increasing the security levels. Also, in cases where aircraft for technical or other reasons (eg bad weather) need specific guidance, it will now be possible to provide the aircraft with a specific and precise course so that it can approach the Airport for a safe landing.

The Service at an initial stage will be provided by Cypriot Air Traffic Controllers under the guidance of their Greek trainers until the completion of their on-the-job training.

Addressing the participants online, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works expressed his satisfaction, because another initiative undertaken by the Ministry is being implemented and thus resolves another issue that has been pending for decades, since this service was not offered in our country. Now with the implementation of this project, Cyprus is ranked in the map of the countries that offer this Service and, consequently, high level services to both the airlines and the passenger public.

This development, said Mr. Karousos, is indicative of the continuous improvement and upgrading of the Department of Civil Aviation, with the application of modern methods and tools. At the moment, there is the biggest technological upgrade in matters of equipment and services of the Department of Civil Aviation with a budget that exceeds € 15 million.

Especially at this important time, added the Minister, who have already entered the tourist season and an increase in arrivals and departures is expected, the use of such tools helps in the optimal management of air traffic, maintaining high levels of safety and in as much as possible to reduce delays, thus offering more upgraded services to passengers and airlines.

Finally, Mr. Karousos thanked the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Stavros Michael, who is retiring next month, the Director Mrs. Panagiota Dimitriou and the staff of the Civil Aviation Department for the work they have done to enable the start of the Service, as well as the other competent Services and Departments for their contribution to the implementation of the Service. At the same time, thanks are expressed to the staff of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Service for the support and expertise they offered for the implementation of the project.
