The approval by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday of the National Strategy for the promotion of natural childbirth and the reduction of prematurity in Cyprus was announced by the Ministry Health.
As mentioned, the National Strategy will be an important tool for dealing with the problem and includes four axes of action, covering issues related to the Health System, the Education of health professionals, informing the public and in research.
According to the Ministry, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that caesarean section rates have been increasing worldwide in recent decades, with statistical data ranking Cyprus as one of the countries with the highest rates of caesarean section births, but also with correspondingly high rates of prematurity.
It is added that the implementation of the National Strategy will promote the coordinated action of all competent bodies to reduce inappropriate caesarean sections and premature births under the general coordination of the Ministry of Health, while for the purposes of monitoring the implementation of the measures/actions of the Strategy, a Monitoring Committee will be set up, in which, in addition to the Ministry of Health, representatives from the Health Insurance Organization (OHI), the Pancypriot Medical Association (PIS), the Pancypriot Association of Nurses and Midwives (PA.SY.NM) and the Federation of Cyprus Patient Associations (CPA).
