Under the slogan Jeans for Genes, bank staff wore jeans to mark World Rare Disease Day
“Jeans for Genes” were worn by AstroBank staff members with the aim of raising public awareness of rare genetic diseases.
On the occasion of World Rare Disease Day and with the ultimate aim of supporting the Pancypriot Association of Rare Genetics Pathos, “Unique Smiles”, for the second consecutive year AstroBank staff came to work wearing jeans for a good cause.
Making a play on the jean fabric and the English word for the gene, the bank staff wanted through this action, to join their voice with the Link and pass the message that “Each alone is rare , but together we are strong“.
The effort of the Association is focused on the development of the center for rare diseases that will contribute to early diagnosis and correct treatment, reducing the mental suffering and also the huge financial costs borne by patients and their families in trying to identify what ails them and how to manage it.
As part of the action, AstroBank staff posted related photos on social media with snapshots of their workplace wearing jeans, under the slogan “wear that you care – jeans for GENES” in order to promote the work carried out by the Association.
In the European Union, any disease affecting less than 5 people per 10,000 is considered rare. Most suffer from very rare diseases that affect 1 in 100,000 or more people.
It is estimated that in the EU there are around 8,000 different rare diseases affecting 27-36 million people, i.e. 6-8% of the population. In Cyprus, it is estimated that there are approximately 60,000 patients with a rare disease.
The “Jeans for Genes” action is part of AstroBank's multi-level corporate social responsibility actions, which has always stood by our fellow human beings in need.
