Rebound year for travel compared to 2021

Cypriots spent €1.39 billion on travel abroad in 2022, a recovery year for travel compared to 2021 when pandemic restrictions were still in place.

According to data published today by the Statistical Service, the number of residents who took part in trips abroad in 2022 for personal reasons reached 158,294, showing an increase of 110.5% compared to 75,204 residents who traveled in the year 2021.

The number of trips abroad in 2022 (refers to the number of trips made by Cypriot residents and not to the number of people) amounted to 1,234,615 compared to 471,119 in 2021, an increase of 162.1% compared to 2021.< /p>

86.4% of the trips were made for personal reasons (rest and recreation, visiting relatives or friends, health reasons, pilgrimage, etc.) and 13.6% for business reasons.

In contrast, the number, the number of trips within Cyprus decreased by 9.7%, from 1,870,923 trips recorded in 2021, to 1,689,154 in 2022.

The percentage of trips for personal reasons made up 98.5% of trips within Cyprus and for business reasons 1.5%.

According to the Statistical Service, expenses for trips abroad amounted to €1,394.5 million, marking an increase of 185.2% compared to 2021, with spending on transportation making up the majority of spending at 34.3%. Smaller percentages corresponded to accommodation expenses (24.3%), food and drinks in restaurants and cafes (22.2%) and other expenses (19.2%).

Travel expenses within Cyprus amounted to €266.5m in 2022, an increase of 2.0% compared to 2021.

Expenditure on food and drink in restaurants and cafes made up the largest proportion of travel expenditure within Cyprus (39.1%), while accommodation expenses accounted for 32.9%. Transportation costs accounted for 11.9% of total costs and other costs for 16.1%.
