The Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Marios Panagidis, represented Cyprus at the extraordinary meeting of the Directors General of Energy of the European Union, convened yesterday, May 10, 2022, by the French Presidency of the Council of the EU. & nbsp; & nbsp;
The main topic of discussion was the final evaluation of the report of the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), regarding the wholesale electricity market, which takes place in the context of the energy crisis and price increases in the energy sector. & Nbsp ; In this context, the European Commission and the Member States also had the opportunity to report on the measures they have taken to address high energy prices, to protect vulnerable consumers and businesses, at European and national level respectively.
< p>During the meeting of the Directors-General of Energy, the Member States exchanged views on the final assessment of ACER for the wholesale electricity market and in particular on the policy measures proposed by ACER, which aim, inter alia, to shield vulnerable consumers from price volatility and accelerate the integration of the European electricity market.
Mr. Panagidis in his speech stated, among other things, that Cyprus has been significantly affected by the increase in energy prices. Regarding the evaluation of ACER, he said that the different conditions and the energy mix of the Member States should be taken into account. Among other things, he made special reference to the need for diversification of energy sources, mainly through endogenous energy sources, for the completion of interconnections with emphasis on those related to the transfer of green energy, for the promotion of cooperation with strategic partners such as Israel and Egypt in the field of energy and on the need to promote mechanisms for the protection of vulnerable consumers and businesses.
Regarding the measures taken by Cyprus to address the energy crisis, Mr. Panagidis pointed out that despite the short-term measures taken at national level, including the reduction of VAT on electricity and taxation on fuel, the harmonized index of consumer prices rose to 6.2% in March 2022 compared to March 2021. On this he called for additional measures at EU level as well as for financial support within specific criteria.
Concluding, Mr. Panagidis stated that our country expects the publication by the European Commission on 18 May of the “RePowerEU” Plan, which will aim at decoupling from Russian fossil fuels and will provide, inter alia, tools for tackling the energy crisis and accelerating the penetration of renewable energy sources into the energy mix of MS. & nbsp;
