The Reception and Hospitality Center for Applicants for International Protection in Kofinou will be visited on Tuesday, as part of his official visit to Cyprus, by the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier
According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Interior during his visit to the Center the German President, accompanied by the Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou, will be briefed by the Minister of the Interior and will be guided around the site, while he will also have the opportunity to talk with residents and staff of the Center.
As stated in the announcement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the KYFADP Kofinou currently accommodates approximately 400 people, including families and single men and women. The Center accommodates approximately 80 children, who attend public schools and are engaged in educational and other activities within the Center, which are offered in collaboration with NGOs and voluntary groups. The Center is open and the maximum duration of accommodation is six months.
It is also noted that the Center is currently undergoing renovation and expansion work and that, upon completion of the work, the Center's capacity will reach 750-800 beds, while a new medical center, recreational areas and other infrastructure will be created.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the project is expected to be completed in 2024 and is co-financed by 75% from the Asylum, Immigration, Integration Fund of the European Commission and with the support of the European Union Agency for Asylum.
