Attack on “DIAS” band: Police arrested five and are looking for another ten (photos)

The Police continues with intensive rhythms the investigations regarding the attack received yesterday by employees in the DIAS complex. Last night, the Police arrested four people, while according to a newer information , a fifth person was identified and arrested who seems to be involved in what took place last night.

In addition, police sources reported that one of the twelve injured police officers was hit in the abdomen when one of the rioters threw a flare at him.

Specifically, the announcement of the Police states that:

In connection with last night's incidents, the Police proceeded to arrest four persons, while the evaluation of evidence material for the identification of other persons who participated in them continues.

During the incidents and the arrests, 12 of our members were injured, seven of whom visited the Hospital.

An enhanced investigative team has already been appointed by the Nicosia Police Department in order to fully investigate the incidents and bring those responsible to justice.

Looking for ten – Attention to the CCTV of the DIA building

In the meantime, the Police proceeded to the publication of ten photos depicting people who appear based on the closed circuit monitoring to be involved in what happened last night in the building of the DIA complex.

For last night's episodes that took place in the DIAS band, the Police is looking for ten people, whose photos are sent to you for publication, in order to identify and locate them.

The first reaction of the President of the Republic came in a strong style, who in his post on social media stated, among other things, that “The state will respond strictly to those who ignore the laws”.

The attack was also condemned by Parliament Speaker Annita Dimitriou and Government Ministers. “I unequivocally condemn tonight's attack on the DIAS band,” Ms. Dimitriou wrote in a Twitter post, noting that “we owe it to Eleftherotypia and Democracy to protect it at all costs.”

For his part, Interior Minister Nikos Nouris said in a post on his Twitter account that free speech is a cornerstone of democracy, adding that “mobs and thugs have no place.”

“I strongly condemn the episodes in the band @SigmaTV. Freedom of the press is non-negotiable. The attack on the media is an attack on democracy itself. “We must all win the battle against the pandemic together,” wrote Transport Minister Giannis Karousos.

The President of the Cyprus Writers' Union, George Frangos, states in his own post that “the unprecedented violence against the Zeus Group is abominable, repressive and dangerous for the Republic! “The fellow journalists and all the staff have the full support of the PSC.” He states that on Monday the PSC will be officially positioned, informing the European Federation of Journalists.

Messages of condemnation were also sent by political leaders, MEPs and officials, while European Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou condemned the attack, writing on Twitter that freedom of the press is sacred and non-negotiable in the European family. “The fight against the COVID19 pandemic must be waged together, always based on science,” he added.
