Attracting French tourists through the command

Attracting French tourists through the command

An opening to the French market, through the command, is sought by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, who invests a lot in the sweet wine of Cyprus, in order to attract the French for holidays on our island.

The goal of Mr. Perdios, through the actions of his ministry for this year, is to give further emphasis to the wine routes and primarily to the command, in order for it to get, as he said, the publicity it deserves. In this context, an attempt will be made to connect the command with the French, who know, in his expression, “to respect wine”. To this end, one of the ten tourism certification standards promoted this year by the Ministry of Tourism has a French name and is called Les vignobles de la Grande Commanderie – “the vineyards of the Grand Administration”. Certification that is estimated to concern mainly areas and points of interest but also businesses (wineries, wineries, restaurants, etc.).

The Undersecretary of Tourism, in the context of the press conference he gave via teleconference last Tuesday, highlighted the relationship that exists between the French and the command, stating, among other things, that after the wars given by Napoleon, he then visited Cyprus and specifically village of Laneia and took vines to plant them in France. S. Perdios also referred to the relations between Cyprus and France, noting, among other things, that the village of Lasanias took its name from the Lusignans. However, the objectives of the State Department for the development of the French market, in addition to the growth recorded in recent years by Cypriot wine and its quality upgrade, are facilitated by the direct air connection of Cyprus with France, which for years was virtually non-existent. .

From this year, two companies, Wizz Air and Ryanair, will connect direct flights from Cyprus to Paris, while it is not ruled out that, if there is interest, other companies may enter the market or strengthen the flight program of the companies that start itineraries. The direct connection with France started last year, however, due to the pandemic and France's early ranking in category C, the flights that started from Larnaca and Paphos lasted only about a month.

It is worth noting, however, that France, although the most popular tourist destination in the world, is also a large market for outbound tourism, as millions of French people travel abroad every year. Cyprus, however, is visited by only a few thousand French tourists annually. According to the Statistical Service, in 2019, when tourist arrivals to Cyprus recorded a historic record and amounted to almost 4 million, arrivals from France were only 31 thousand, recording a decrease compared to the previous year, since 2018 amount to 36 thousand.
