Austrian Airlines (AUA) is in the strongest demand for holiday travel during the summer, and in this context, Greece and Cyprus are at the center of their summer program, as it was emphasized during the presentation of the summer flight schedule in Vienna. with the booking phase for the 2021 holiday season starting right now.
According to the first details of the program, there will be, for example, up to ten flights a week to Heraklion, Crete or 16 to Larnaca, while an increased frequency of flights is planned for Rhodes, Mykonos, Kos, as well as for Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Catania and the Canary Islands, with the total number of flights to holiday destinations, with the current perspective, amount to 150 per week.

“We expect increased demand in the tourism sector in the summer and therefore we are increasing our supply of holiday destinations by up to 20% from July,” said AUA CEO Michael Trestl during the presentation. In general, Austrian Airlines – which is a subsidiary of the German Lufthansa – wants to gradually increase the flight schedule again, depending of course on the course of the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions.
After a slight peak during the Christmas holidays, their flight offers fell in January and February to 15% of pre-crisis levels, and now the target is to be around 20% of a regular season in March and from April to 30%.
More than 20 destinations will resume with the company's summer flight schedule, including Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Florence, Gothenburg, Kosice, Krakow, Lviv, Odessa and Oslo. Under the new flight schedule, some long-haul destinations will also be served again, such as Amman, Bangkok, Chicago and Tokyo, returning to the intercontinental flight schedule, while there are currently no flights to South Africa due to the pandemic which is not a destination for summer, even in “normal” years.
For the first time since 2009, Austrian Airlines will return from the end of March with flights from Vienna to Hannover in the 2021 summer flight schedule, as the route has so far been operated by Eurowings.
