Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdul Ruf Talukder has resigned, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg, days after protesters stormed the central bank's headquarters amid political unrest in the country.

Talukder resigned on Friday and cited “personal reasons” for his departure. He leaves two years before the end of his term. The central bank did not immediately respond to an email seeking more information outside regular business hours.

Talukder's departure, which was earlier reported by local newspapers and television channels, comes after the political uprising that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country. On Wednesday, protesters stormed the Bangladesh Bank headquarters in Dhaka and demanded that employees resign.

The country formed an interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus after weeks of violent street protests that left more than 400 people dead, according to local media.

Bangladesh's economy

60-year-old Talukder took office in July 2022 when the country's economy had to manage a currency devaluation and high inflation. During his tenure, he sought to introduce greater flexibility in market interest rates and currency management. But he has often been criticized for failing to address governance issues in the banking sector that have led to high loan default rates.

Bangladesh's economy is struggling to catch up after the pandemic and is under pressure from curfews and the recent internet outages. The nation last year secured a $4.7 billion loan program from the International Monetary Fund, but its foreign reserves remain low and fell to $20.5 billion in July.
