Several mountain communities of Paphos District were dressed in white, giving a white and optimistic image, during this difficult period that everyone is experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In his statements to KYPE, the president of K.S. Lassas Elias Ioannou reported that in his community due to the bitter cold the fireplaces and the coals were lit. Mr. Ioannou said that snowflakes fell in the community of Lhasa and the cold is very bitter, with the result that all the residents of the area have been confined to their homes.
The community, he continued, has about 60 inhabitants, most of whom are 98 years old and 95 and younger, however, stating that 70% of the inhabitants are over 70 years old.
Last year at the same time, said Mr. Ioannou, there was more rain in his area but the cold this year “breaks bones”.
For his part, the mayor of Panagia Savvas Nikolaou in his statements to KYPE stated that snow fell in the location “Vouni tis Panagias”, noting that the cold is bitter. It started, he said, “it was snowing from the early morning hours, from 03:30 onwards and in the morning the snow that fell in the community was about 10 cm.” .
The road network is open in Panagia, he noted, adding that the problems caused by the snowfall in some areas were addressed by public works crews. He added that the Primary School and the Kindergarten of Panagia remained closed today for security reasons.
In the community of Panagia, he noted, there are 340 inhabitants, of which 70% are elderly.
Extreme cold prevails in Paphos, however, no problems have been reported.
