With the ringing of bells in all the Holy Temples of Athienou, the birthplace of the Metropolitan of Paphos Georgios, his election as Archbishop of Nea Iustiniana and all of Cyprus was accepted.
As the Mayor of Athienou Kyriakos Kareklas reported to KYPE, "too many Athenians had gone to the Holy Archdiocese since the morning, where the vote for the election of the new Archbishop of Cyprus would take place. With the official hearing of the announcement of the election of the Metropolitan of Paphos Georgiou, who was born in Athienou, the bells of all the churches of the Municipality began to ring joyfully, welcoming the new pastor of the Church of Cyprus.
He added. that "there is euphoria in the Municipality of Athienou and everyone is very happy about the fact of the election of one of our own people, Georgios, to the archbishopric».
Mr. Kareklas expressed "satisfaction on behalf of all Athenians for the election of Paphos Georgios" in the archbishopric. "We feel that for us Christmas came today. We believe that a worthy hierarch has been elected to the archbishopric, a fighter who is the most suitable to lead the Church of Cyprus in the right way.
We are sure, he continued, that "these things, which recently the new -now-Archbishop, said he intends to implement, will put them into practice and will really change the way the Church sees and comes into contact with world of Cyprus. We are still sure that George, a native of Athienou, will be an excellent hierarch and will greatly help the Church of Cyprus to progress and with his election the facts will change.
He also mentioned that « Archbishop George is a man of excellent morals and for’ that in last Sunday's elections, almost 80% of Athenians who know him, supported him and voted for him. George entered second in the triumvirate and today he was elected by the Holy Synod with eleven votes, as the new Archbishop of Nea Iustiniana and all of Cyprus.
Answering a related question, the Mayor said that "in Athienou live the three from the four brothers of the new Archbishop and from the morning they went to the Holy Archdiocese in Nicosia to be near him, to live with him this extraordinary and Divine moment, for everyone.
