Viral infection usually causes a mild illness and most people recover within a few weeks and is similar to human measles.

Early symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain and exhaustion. However, some people can become seriously ill.

The disease can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person, but there is a very low risk of transmission to the general population.

According to Public Health England, monkey pox was first discovered in 1958 when outbreaks of smallpox appeared in monkeys kept for research.
