President Erdogan's recent statements on Varos are a matter of great concern in Berlin, with the German Foreign Ministry urging Turkey to respect all UN decisions.
Asked about Erdogan's statements, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christopher Burger said: “In recent months, the German government has made repeated efforts for dialogue and de-escalation in with constructive dialogue.
For this reason, the German government listened with particular concern to the statements about Varosia, stating that the status quo of Varosia is a result of UN and UN decisions.
“We call on Turkey to respect all these decisions and to hand over control of the region to the UN peacekeeping force. “Turkey's unilateral actions do not help in our view and jeopardize the positive steps of recent months in EU-Turkey relations, as well as the settlement of the Cyprus issue.”
