The issue was today on the agenda of the Commission after a relevant law proposal submitted by AKEL

The Parliamentary Labor Committee expects the submission of a bill by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare that will regulate the issue of single parents' allowance by the end of May, said the Chairman of the Labor Committee of the Parliament, Andreas Kavkalias, noting at the same time that the matter will be included in the Committee's agenda in early June.

The issue was found today on the agenda of the Committee, as the MPs of AKEL, Andrea Kavkalia, Christos Christofias and Giorgos Koukoumas, submitted a proposal for a law to remove from the definition of the term “single-parent family” the requirement that one parent be without a partner and on the other hand, the right to single-parent family allowance should not be terminated, in case the single parent lives with another person.

It seems that the bill promoted by the government will have a similar content. As reported to the Committee, the bill will amend the provisions of the legislation concerning the cohabitation of single parents with other persons, with whom they do not have children in common, so that this cohabitation does not constitute a factor for discontinuing the single parent allowance, but also to the incomes of the partner are not taken into account for granting the allowance.

“The Committee at the beginning of June will have the specific bill and the proposed law on the agenda, with the request that the bill or the proposed law or both be brought to the Plenary before the end of June for final regulation of this issue,” he said. in his statements after the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee, AKEL Member of Parliament, Andreas Kavkalias.

When asked if the bill differs from the law proposal tabled by the AKEL Members of Parliament, Mr. Kavkalias stated that it is not known still the exact content of the bill and added that, since the consultation is now starting, it is beneficial to give space and time for it to evolve, noting that the time that will be given is also specific, since the bill is expected to be tabled before the end of the coming

Mr. Kavkalias noted, moreover, that “the existing legislative framework, which provides for the termination of the one-parent family allowance in case of cohabitation, violates the right to privacy, violates the basic human rights of the child and that's why it must change”, adding that “AKEL's law proposal is precisely aimed at removing this anachronistic provision”.
